My cat has always been on the science diet brand, ever since I picked him up from the pound/shelter. He prefers this chicken flavour and I have only changed the package label from regular chicken to this urinary/hairball formula since he turned middle age. Male cats are know for being susceptible to crystals and touch wood, mine is crystal free to date. Hairballs do get coughed up but that's because he's a good groomer. He loves this food and it is a pretty healthy formula for him. It's my go-to regular brand. ★★★★★ The cats meow (couldn’t resist). (TLDR: Expensive? Yes. Worth it? YES.) One of my boys blocked. Apparently it’s super common in neutered males and NOBODY TOLD ME, so I’m telling you, and you should tell EVERYBODY. It’s terrifying. And expensive. When he got out of the pet hospital, the vet told me he would need to be on food formulated for urinary care for the rest of his life.I did a google deep dive (there were spreadsheets, it was a tense week) and yeah, food formulated for urinary care is different than food that isn’t. Not sure why it’s not all formulated for urinary support if blockages are so common, but I digress. I really like Hills. It’s not the ONLY option; there are other vet recommended brands that have trials and data backing up their food, but Hills consistently scores high with vets, pets, and pet owners.It doesn’t guarantee that your cat won’t block, or won’t block again. But my cats have been more energetic, their coats are softer, they shed less, they have virtually ZERO hair balls, they barely fart, and they LOVE the taste. I tried a couple other brands before I settled on Hills, and one girl would just sit there looking pissed and meowing at me when I tried to feed her Purina. I get it, it’s a lot more expensive than what I (and probably you) were using before, but it really ACTUALLY makes a difference. For me, it’s worth $80/bag to not have to go through finding my guy twitching on the floor, racing him to the vet 3 separate times, and then finally to the pet hospital at 10:00pm. That preceded a sleepless night and a week of tricking him into taking his meds. He hasn’t had a problem since and its been almost 2 years (knock on wood).
